How to create backups in a control panel

Before you start

• A remote destination: a Storage VPS, another server (SFTP), or S3-compatible storage.
• Enough local disk headroom — panels stage archives locally before uploading.
• A retention plan (e.g. 7 daily + 4 weekly).

Step-by-step guide

1. Enable scheduled backups in your panel (menu paths in the Quick answer) — daily for files+DB is a sane default.
2. Add the remote destination (SFTP/S3) and select it as the backup target; keep at most a short local retention.
3. Set retention so backups cannot fill the disk.
4. Run one backup manually and confirm the archive appears at the remote destination.
5. Test a restore — restore a file and a database table to a temp location; an untested backup is a hope, not a plan.

Common issues

• Disk fills up: local retention too generous or the remote upload silently failing — check backup logs and free space.
• Backups run but restores fail: archives truncated by disk space or DB dumped without single-transaction consistency — always test.
• Huge sites time out: exclude cache directories; back up the DB and files on separate schedules.
• Credentials in plain text: restrict who can read panel backup settings; use key-based SFTP where possible.
