Quick answer: Open a terminal and run ssh root@YOUR_SERVER_IP, then enter the root password shown on your service page in the Cloud2Y Client Area. On first connection type yes to accept the server's host key.
Overview
SSH (Secure Shell) is the standard way to administer a Linux VPS: an encrypted remote terminal session. Every Cloud2Y Linux VPS has SSH enabled out of the box on port 22. Windows, macOS and Linux all ship an OpenSSH client today, so usually no extra software is needed.
Before you start
- Your server's IP address and root password — both on the service page in the Client Area.
- An Active service (Pending servers aren't reachable yet).
- A terminal: Windows Terminal/PowerShell, macOS Terminal, or any Linux shell.
Step-by-step guide
- Open your terminal.
- Connect (replace the IP with your server's dedicated IP):
ssh [email protected] - On the first connection you'll see a host-key fingerprint prompt — type
yes. - Enter the root password (nothing is displayed while typing — that's normal).
- You're in. Update the system first:
apt update && apt upgrade -y # Ubuntu / Debian dnf upgrade -y # AlmaLinux / Rocky
If SSH runs on a non-default port, add -p: ssh -p 2222 [email protected].
Common issues
- Connection timed out? Check the IP, that the server is running (see power controls), and that your local network doesn't block port 22.
- Permission denied? Password is case-sensitive; paste it carefully. If you changed the password and lost it, reset the root password.
- Host key changed warning? Expected after an OS reinstall — remove the old key with
ssh-keygen -R 203.0.113.10and reconnect. - Server not reachable at all? Use the KVM Console on the service page to see the server's screen directly.
When to contact support
If the KVM Console shows the server is up but SSH never answers, or you suspect a network issue on our side, open a support ticket with your IP and a traceroute output.
Frequently asked questions
What port does SSH use?
SSH listens on port 22 by default, and every Cloud2Y Linux VPS ships that way. If you moved SSH to a custom port, add the -p flag, for example ssh -p 2222 root@YOUR_IP.
Why do I see a host key prompt on first connection?
Your computer has not seen this server before and asks you to trust its fingerprint. Type yes — it is expected on the first connection.
Can I use SSH from Windows?
Yes — Windows 10/11 include the OpenSSH client in PowerShell and Windows Terminal, or you can use PuTTY.
